The innovation of social media has come with all sorts of challenges and spreading knowledge. Of course, social media can take a toll on one’s self-esteem, worth, and growth. Many people get stuck in a box or struggle to create more and more content based on their persona. That’s from my experience and other influencers like Nia, who was originally known as Frogirlginny.

Nia broke the cycle, escaped the box and became the light out of the shadows of Frogirlginny. Nia was known for her huge afro across social media, and she would share her life, hair care tips and adventures about loving her hair. I met Nia at the time where I was just beginning my own natural hair care journey. Her Happy Froday event was a soothing balm to my soul with the words “I love my skin. I love my hair. I am worthy. I am loved. I am beautiful.” Little did I know at the time that I would become good friends with Nia outside of social media. I would also become friends with an amazing group of girls that support each other, lean on each other and grow together.

A year later, my friend came back to Atlanta to show her film, I Am Not My Hair. It was a shock to many people that she cut her hair. To many, it was what she was known for and it brought her so many opportunities. But, Nia is more than her hair. She’s a beautiful Gemini that has a beautiful laugh and shares her light all around the world with people young and old. She dances to afrobeats, makes great vegan meals, creates beautiful memories and saves those memories through scrapbooks. She makes sure that we should be comfortable with ourselves by sharing her journey and creating beautiful moments like #MyRealSelfSeptember & #NoMakeupMarch. All of these things show in her film about her journey.

There were many moments in the film that touched me deeply. Seeing my friend show herself in her rawest form was one of the most touching things I have seen in my life. Many people in the room felt the same way through our tears, laughter, and joy together in one space. To experience the beginning of Nia the Light outside of the shadows of Frogirlginny is a memory I will treasure forever.

In the inspiration of Nia’s journey, my friend Christiana decided to get her hair big chopped live at the event. It was beautiful, tearful and full of joy. As we all watched Isabella (CurlPOP) cut her hair, all the people in the room were cheering Christina on with our full support. I am thankful and blessed to have such amazing friends.

Thank you, Nia, for opening yourself to us and being an amazing friend. You are full of the beautiful light that many realize and I will continue to watch you grow & shine on us all. Christina, my friend, welcome to the short hair crew. Thank you for your beautiful friendship & support. Isabella, thank you for being the queen you are and making Christina & Nia feel comfortable to shed their layers with us. Stefan, thank you for capturing such beautiful memories of everyone in the room. Lastly, thank you for reading this open letter. For each and every one of you that reads this, I hope you feel inspired to free yourself from exceptions and boundaries like Nia & Christina with your personal journey.

Until then…

Be blessed,

Sterling x
